First Direct Flight Between Australia and Europe Set To Launch

Starting in 2018, travelers will be able to fly non-stop between Australia and Europe. Qantas has announced a direct service from London to Perth, which would be the longest flight in the world at 17 hours, 9,010 miles.

The current record holder is Emirates Airlines, with an 8,819 mile haul from Dubai to Auckland. Second place belongs to Qantas’ 8,576 mile Dallas to Sydney route. By the end of 2018, there’s a good chance that the London to Perth trip could be outdistanced by a couple of rivals, including Qatar Airways’ planned 9,030 mile non-stop route between Doha and Auckland, and Singapore Airlines’ reinstating of the former longest route in the world, Singapore to Newark, NJ.

The move is part of a larger effort by Australia to modernize its commercial aviation scene for the 21st century and beyond. By the mid-2020’s, Sydney is set to have a second airport which will accommodate the increased volume of traffic placed upon Kingsford Smith International, as well as the increased size of aircraft that will begin to see action within the next 20 years.

The quest for long distance bragging rights is great for airline competition, and consumers. With more route options, and more fuel efficient aircraft, cheap tickets prices should be getting easier to find. In 2016, airlines reaped record profits due to a drop in the price of crude oil, but analysts believe these profits will fall as the price of oil rises next year.

Regardless of where prices land in the new year, there are still a myriad of ways to find great deals on tickets. Most of these deals come via social media, where a heroic bunch of individuals have made it their lives’ journey to score you the best possible deals.

One of the best outlets around is ‘The Points Guy.’ Run by Brian Kelly, a leader and influencer in the “industry of points, miles, and travel in general.” After growing up with a penchant for traveling, Kelly got a job in Wall Street, requiring him to travel extensively and rack up a ton of points. He’s used these points to book some extravagant leisure trips and makes it his life’s goal to bestow this knowledge on others.

When booking a long haul trip, or any trip, it’s important to be intelligently frugal. Extensive research will help you land the very best deals, making your journey affordable yet fulfilling. Still, if you’d like to be among the first to fly aboard the Qantas 787 from London to Perth, you’d better start saving today. That flight won’t be for the faint of wallet.
