Howard Johnson’s launched in the twenties, propelled to great heights of popularity by the rise of the automobile. By the sixties, there were over a thousand across the country.

As of this year, there is only one original Howard Johnson’s that’s still operating. The hotels were sold off, to be operated with the brand name but without any of the familiar design, and the restaurants died completely.
